When the Washington Redskins selected quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fourth round after trading several picks to acquire Robert Griffin III, there was a significant uproar. However, fast forward a few months to today, and Cousins is now preparing to lead the team during training camp while RG3 rehabilitates his injured knee.
He doesn't intend to take that role lightly.
"Now, in terms of my presence in the locker room and that kind of a thing, I'll probably try to be a little more vocal so that I don't come across to my teammates as somebody who's afraid of that role or not comfortable in that role," Cousins told Rich Campbell of the Washington Times. "It'll be an interesting balance to have to walk because obviously I don't want to step on anybody's toes, but I also need to be ready if called upon."
Cousins played a valuable role in helping the Redskins claim their first divisional crown since 1999. When RG3's knee buckled after a brutal hit from the Baltimore Raven's Haloti Ngata, Cousins stepped in, throwing one of the most memorable touchdown passes in recent Redskins history, and eventually leading the team to a season-saving 31-28 overtime victory. Kirk started in place of Griffin the following week against Cleveland, and threw for 329 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to keep the postseason dream alive, and effectively winning over teammates and the Redskins fan base.
He now has the chance he's been waiting for as the top quarterback for the entire offseason program and perhaps in to training camp as RG slowly works his way back in to shape.
"Any time you can have a good idea of what's coming, it's going to help," Cousins said. "But the reality of my situation – and really the reality of the NFL, in general – is you don't know what's coming next. You don't know what's around the corner. To think that it's always going to be planned out for you is naive and foolish. I've got to be ready to roll with the punches and react to whatever happens. To the degree that I'm able to do that, I'll be successful."
After years of enduring the likes of Jason Campbell, Donovon McNabb and Rex Grossman – that confidence is music to the ears of Redskins fans across the globe.
