Production has always had value in the NFL, but there comes a time when a player's attitude nullifies it. For DeAngelo Hall, that time has come and gone, and should once again be considered. He's the one remaining "me guy" left on the roster and it might be time to move on.
The Redskins have the worst passing defense in the league. Just look at the stats:
- 2,514 total yards (32nd)
- 314.2 yards per game (32nd)
- 19 touchdowns (32nd)
- 31 plays of 20+ (fifth most)
- 7 plays of 40+ (tied for most)
- 28.4 points allowed per game (28th)
The Redskins have also been thrown at the most: 331 attempts; which doesn't justify the numbers, it just shows you how big the target on their back is. Only the dolphins have been thrown at more times per game. (All stats came from NFL.com)
With that said, is DeAngelo Hall really un-cutable? I get that we don't have anybody better than him stepping up, but that can't be used as an excuse much longer. The Redskins can't get much worse than 32 overall. Ironically, the only thing he has provided recently is sound tackling–something he used to catch a ton of hell for.
And I'm not convinced that playing safety is a much better option for him. Think back to all the double moves he's bitten on. God forbid he has to cover a tight end. He's not built for the position, he doesn't have the patience for the position, and I'm not sure he has the intelligence either. He was also supposed to be Charles Woodson for us this year…like that's happened.
DeAngelo Hall is however, one of our captains–the guy who everyone is counting on to say and do the right things. Everywhere Hall's played he been trouble. We've seen plenty of it in his five years with the team and Sunday's ejection is just a reminder of it. Hall says the ref is equally to blame, but it doesn't matter–the ref cannot be kicked off the field. Hall let his temper get the best of him as he's done so many times before.
Again, could you see Fletcher or RG3 do that? Didn't think so.
With a poor outing in against the Carolina Panthers, the Redskins corner could be gone before the bye week. That would give them enough time to try new players out and get more accustomed to the remaining guys. If not then, wait till the end of the year. The saved money could definitely be spent better elsewhere.
