The first half of the season is in the books. The Redskins have dropped four straight and don't appear to be the same team that started the season. Josh and I are handing out grades for the offense, defense, special teams, and coaching.
Offense?
Josh – Is there anything between a 0 and an F? The offense is just terrible, you can chalk that up the QB, the injuries or whatever but the bottom line is they're not getting anything accomplished and are painful to watch.
Justin – F! The only good thing is the offense can only get better as the season finishes. Right now the offense is averaging over two turnovers per game and was held scoreless against the Buffalo Bills.
Defense?
Josh – C+ for the defense, but honestly it's really hard to tell just how good they are considering they're spending nearly three quarters on the field. If the offense could string together a few long drives I think the defense would be even better. With that said the one thing they're not doing is forcing turnovers and that is what this teams needs to do if they want to win.
Justin – They get a B for the simple fact that they don’t give up a lot of points (just under 20 per game. There creating pressure and lead the league in sacks just a few weeks ago. They become an A defense if they start forcing more turnovers and possibly score some points of their own.
Special teams?
Josh – Graham Gano and Sav Rocca get A's from me. Three of Gano's four misses are due to blocked field goals and in spite of our offense Rocca has been able to reverse field position with his punts. Brandon Banks and the return teams get an F from me. They've done nothing. In fact while Gano and Helu were setting franchise records last Sunday vs the 49ers Banks set an NFL record by recovering four fumbles, sure they were his own, but he can now say he's in the record books.
Justin – B-, to many mistakes. Graham Gano and Sav Rocca have been great, but without a solid return game is what the Redskins would need to get an A. Brandon Banks has not been the “playmaker” he was last year before the knee injury. Blocked kicks and penalties are what make the B a B-.
Coaching?
Josh – Honestly I don't know what to grade the coaches. Kyle and Mike certainly get marked down because of the lack of running the ball, especially against teams like Philly who are terrible at stopping the run, but with Rex and Beck at quarterback it's tough to say that the pass plays that are called aren't the right ones because you have two quarterbacks who can't execute them. However I've got to give them an F. One would have to think if the team would have run the ball more against Philly Rex wouldn't have had those 4 picks, he'd still be the starter and the team would probably have more wins. Defense, I'll give Haslett a B. There have been some bad calls by him, but overall I'd say he puts his players in position to make plays.
Justin – The Dallas 3rd & 21 play call, pulling Rex early, and only scoring 13 first quarter points all season leave me no option, F! The coaches’ job is to put the RIGHT players in the RIGHT position at the RIGHT time. Don’t feel like that has been the case this season.
Mid Season MVP?
Josh – Sadly it's Sav Rocca . He's the only guy game in and game out whose performance has been without fault. Close runner ups would be London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan, but Rocca with his punts is the one player who constantly gives the Redskins the best chance to win, and when you say that about a punter you're in for a long and painful season.
Justin – Sav Rocca is our clear MVP and as Josh points out, that’s not necessarily a good thing. It is nice to have a solid kicking game in Washington.
For comparison… after the first quarter of the season the grades were:
- Offense: C
- Defense: A
- Special Teams: C
- Coaching: B
